Guidance and Counselling

Welcome to the Guidance and Counselling Department.

All students enrolled at St Stephen’s can access a guidance counsellor on site.

St Stephen’s Catholic College Guidance Counsellors:
Ms Katharina Lane, Mr Peter Graham and Ms Havva Murat-Maksuti

Guidance counsellors are qualified social workers, psychologists, or teachers with an additional Master’s degree in counselling.

Guidance counsellors can support young people to overcome social and emotional barriers to educational success. Young people see guidance counsellors for issues like self-harm, anger, low mood, stress, worries, changes in family configurations, bullying, friendship and other factors affecting their wellbeing.

Guidance counsellors work with students individually or in small groups to help them develop skills for social, academic and personal growth. Guidance counsellors support student referrals to external agencies, work with school teams to enhance student wellbeing and advocate for students on their caseload.

Our guidance counsellors are available as follows:

To book an appointment with a counsellor at St Stephen’s, students can:

  1. Approach the counsellor in the school grounds.
  2. Ask their Pastoral House leader to refer them.
  3. Ask their parent/carer to message or phone the counsellor.

Guidance counsellors are required to keep confidential records. They only share information when:

  • Students are at risk of harm.
  • A student asks them to share information.
  • The law demands sharing of information (court orders, mandatory reporting of harm to a young person).

  • We are honoured to be here today as we gather on the traditional land of the Muluridji people. We acknowledge and pay our respects to the elders and their families: past, present and emerging. Unique from our own Country, yet unified. With traditions that have been passed down through generations, we bring our own values, knowledge and beliefs of land and people. Together, on this land of the Muluridji people, we come to a place where we have the privilege of learning with each other and from each other to grow together to unite our people.
