Geography students from St Stephen’s Catholic College tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2017 Australian Geography Competition. The college received the results just a few weeks into the term, and it was pleasing to see how the students had performed. We have some student geographers at our school who performed to a very high level with three gaining high distinctions, two distinctions, and ten credits. Joshua Snell received an outstanding result finishing in the top one percent of entrants in Australia in the year seven level of the competition. Geography is an important subject which develops a student’s understanding of the spatial interrelationships between people and place. It helps students appreciate the complex nature of social, economic, and environmental interactions at a range of scales.
