St Stephen’s Chess team won the final round of the FNQ Inter-school Chess Competition Premier Division in Cairns recently. The team consisting of Hunter Liebold, Aaron Bryce, Caleb Shorey and Brandon Osborne will now advance to the State Finals in Brisbane next term. Over 340 students (a record number) competed at the tournament held at Trinity Anglican School, White Rock which saw St Stephen’s (20.5 points) beat Trinity Anglican School (17.5 points) and Cairns State High School (17 points) to be one of two teams selected in the High School division. St Stephen’s also won the trophy for the highest scoring school of the year for 2017.
The State Finals will be held at Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) in Brisbane on 14-15 October, where the team will be looking to match their 2015 performance when they were named State Regional Champions.

In the Open Division, St Stephen’s 3 team (Liam Baksaj, Eugenio Bambino, Dylan Cappella and Joshua Kievit) finished third overall with Liam Baksaj taking out third in the individual competition.
