St Stephen’s Catholic College won the Far North Queensland Interschool Chess competition which was held at Cairns SHS recently. The team which consisted of Iago Roche-Maxwell (captain), Jack Burnside, Harry Heath and Dante Cadorin, held out some strong competition from St Augustine’s College and Cairns High to qualify for the state finals which will be held in October. Iago Roche-Maxwell was instrumental in the win after taking out a perfect eight wins from eight rounds which earned him first place in the individual standings. The team will head to Brisbane hoping to improve on their result from last year which saw them as the second best regional team in the state and tied for seventh place overall. Iago was the best regional secondary player in the state at last year’s state finals and was runner up for Board 1 overall. Iago is confident that the team has the ability to perform well at this year’s tournament. From left to right: Dante Cadorin, Iago Roche-Maxwell, Jack Burnside and Harry Heath.
